Juvenile Delinquency Associated with Grief Reaction

Abstract
|
|
|
To determine the relationship between juvenile delinq~sency and acute bereavement reaction the author studied 380 adolescent delinquents, male only, :in "T reformatory near the Taegu area during the month of September, 1977.
With the aid of questionaire distribution, twenty delinquents out of 380 were found to have a history of recent bereavement with one of their parents (incuding three brothers); within only two years prior to the manifestation of delinquency.
From the interview materials with an emphasis on the . bere;avement situation of the delinquents, : the results could be summarized as follows;
The incidence of the recent bereavement, i. e., within two years prior to onset of problematic-delinquency was 5.3 per cent. Of all twenty cases, 12 lost their fathers, five their mothers and. three cases lost their brothers.
As to the cause of death of the bereaved objects 45 o died of unexpected, acute illness or calamitocis accidents. The duration between the time of bereavement and the manifestation of delinquent behaviors varied from one to eighteen months; the ave;rage duration was 8.5 months and in half of the cases, within six months.
Patterns of the presenting delinquency comprised theft (~i cases), adultery (4 cases), violence (4 cases), and robbery (3).
In an analysis of the evaluation score of delinquent behavi´.or (Robins), the highest items were "cold and inaffectinate" and "bad associate", which were followed by "alcohol use, "truancy" and "out late" etc. , and the average score was 4.5.
Generally, the first reactions to their parental death were characterized by numbness and absence of grief, which later followed by various delinquent behaviors. Finally the author suggested_ the urF;ent need for the psychiatric consultation of bereaved adolescent delinquents.
